JERUSALEM — As the constitutional machinery of the state grinds under profound structural strain, an unprecedented legislative and rhetorical campaign has converged on a singular target: Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. While coalition partners loudly frame their antagonism as a heroic defense of the electorate’s will against an activist, unelected legal elite, political analysts and insider maneuvers reveal a far more transactional internal reality.
The fierce, escalating crusade to strip the Attorney General of her authority is not merely an ideological disagreement; it is an aggressive survival mechanism propelled by internal ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) political rivalries, existential panics over frozen yeshiva budgets, and a deep-seated refusal to adapt to shifting legal realities. Facing immense pressure from their own hardline base over the unresolved military conscription crisis and the subsequent expiration of daycare subsidies, Haredi politicians have chosen to execute a classic political deflection—turning a foundational state gatekeeper into the ultimate scapegoat.
The Architecture of Deflection: The Blame Feedback Loop
At the heart of the current crisis lies a total structural deadlock over the military draft exemption laws for yeshiva students. For decades, the ultra-Orthodox political leadership preserved an isolationist arrangement funded by state subventions. However, recent High Court rulings and subsequent enforcement actions by the Attorney General’s office have systematically dismantled these legal loopholes, freezing millions in institutional funding to seminaries whose students refuse to enlist.
Rather than confronting the mathematically impossible task of maintaining absolute draft immunity during an active security crisis, Haredi factions have retreated into a protective wall of denial. This dynamic functions as a classic institutional defense mechanism:
The Refusal of Internal Transformation: Ultra-Orthodox party leaders find themselves entirely trapped by their historical promises to their constituents. To admit a need for compromise would mean risking total political irrelevance to more radical internal factions. Frontiers
- The Displacement of Guilt: To shield their own political apparatus from accountability, leadership has systematically shifted the focus outward. The Attorney General is no longer treated as a professional civil servant rendering objective legal opinions; she is actively demonized as an existential enemy of Torah study and a tool of a hostile “deep state”.
- This aggressive deflection perfectly mirrors a timeless piece of psychological insight found within the wisdom literature of antiquity:
“A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:3, Berean Standard Bible)
By attacking the legal mirror reflecting their policy failures, the political leadership seeks to preserve an artificial aura of blamelessness before an increasingly volatile base.
Deceptive Intellectualism and Institutional Survival
To justify the multi-front assault on the rule of law, the establishment relies heavily on what legal scholars identify as a form of populist, deceptive intellectualism. Complex administrative decisions, budgetary allocations, and statutory equal-burden laws are routinely stripped of their technical context. Instead, they are re-framed through an absolute, friend-or-foe narrative designed to maximize emotional resonance and obscure systemic exploitation.
[THE HAREDI CRISIS PATHWAY]Policy Failure (Draft Deadlock / Frozen Subsidies) │ ▼Internal Base Panic (Threat to Institutional Funding) │ ▼Deceptive Reframing ("An Assault on the Torah") │ ▼Political Scapegoating (Targeting AG Baharav-Miara)
When the Attorney General issued warnings that the government could not legally fund daycare subsidies for the children of illegal draft evaders, the response was a coordinated wave of legislative threats to split her role or force her immediate dismissal. This prioritizing of structural tenure over basic statutory compliance demonstrates an advanced stage of institutional survivalism.
This weaponization of language to sanitize a blunt grab for unaccountable power falls squarely under classical prophetic condemnation:
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20, English Standard Version)
The Islamic Rebuttal: The Universality of Unbiased Justice
The current political maneuvers in Jerusalem highlight a dangerous governing philosophy: the belief that an elite or uniquely pious group should remain entirely immune to the objective standards of the state. By demanding that the legal advisor bend the law to accommodate sector-specific protections, the coalition directly undermines the concept of blind, horizontal justice.
From an external theological perspective, Islamic jurisprudence offers a fierce, unyielding rebuttal to this exact brand of localized, protective legalism. Islamic tradition explicitly demands that the rule of law must remain absolute, applying with equal, crushing clarity regardless of tribal affiliation, religious prestige, or political proximity to power.
The Quran leaves no room for administrative loopholes or tribal self-preservation at the expense of equity:
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.” (Quran 4:135, Sahih International)
Furthermore, prophetic tradition warns that when a ruling class begins to dismantle its own gatekeepers to shield its insiders from structural adjustments, the entire societal fabric faces historic eviction. In a famous warning regarding the selective enforcement of laws to favor an elite sub-group, the Prophet Muhammad noted:
“The people before you were destroyed because when a high-ranking person among them committed a theft, they would let him off, but when a poor, weak person among them stole, they would carry out the punishment upon him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6787)
A Brittle Void of Accountability
As the internal political crosswinds continue to buffet the Attorney General’s office, the broader implications for the state become increasingly stark. The attempt to reduce the independent legal structure to a compliant political appendage exposes a deep moral vacuum at the core of the governing apparatus.
By substituting public accountability with continuous, calculated blame-shifting, the current leadership may successfully shield their corporate interests in the short term. However, history and sacred text alike demonstrate that any system built upon the systemic subversion of objective truth eventually inherits nothing but a brittle, unsustainable void.
